Panday – It’s Hilarious

OMG, Panday is hysterical. Siguro kailangan tanggapin ko na lang na ganito ang sensibilities ng mga producer ng Panday — I’ll just have to put my bar of expectation even lower than it already is. Hilong-hilo na siguro sila trying to produce something that looks like an epic. X

But my god, the gratuitous dialogue. The meaningless “love” flashbacks. The ridiculous characters who try to be serious but end up being funny. (There’s this old man who keeps following Jericho around even ending up in jail with him — hahaha). The non-sensical fight scenes. The computer graphics straight from the early 90’s.

Take this sorry sequence for example: After a lot of drama, being a know-it-all and building up Jericho that he needs to be the Panday, the old man suddenly declares that he doesn’t know how to get to the world of Panday. You can see in his face that he can’t believe it himself that he uttered those lines. Natawa talaga ako dito. And then tells him to look for the Panday komiks because its all written there. Nyek. (Here’s the whole sequence.) So Jericho somehow (by telepathy no doubt) asks his kid buddy to bring him some Panday komiks. Then, inexplicably while Jericho is speed reading the komiks, some prisoners take the komiks! Of course, Jericho beats them up to a pulp so he can continue reading. Then when the fight is over, the prison guards arrive and reprimand Jericho, then a guard takes the komiks from him! The guard then brings the komiks to a burning drum in front of the laundry area of the prison and burns it! Jericho, because he has super strength and super speed (off camera) escapes from the clutches of multiple guards and runs to the burning drum. He tries to put it out with some hanging laundry, but the flames get bigger, and he gets consumed by the flames! Cut to the desert — and Jericho is now conveniently in the Panday world — with his cellphone! Leche.

Anyway, Panday is borrowing heavily from the plot of Sugo where the the blood of the love interest (alay/Heart) is needed to resurrect the evil nemesis (Apo Apukay/Lizardo). Yan na lang ang comment ko diyan kasi magagalit na naman ang mga ABS-CBN lovers.

I will try to forget how Jericho got to the Panday world since the old Philippine town atmosphere looks interesting. But please, this is not of Sugo’s or Encantadia’s caliber. After one week of episodes, what Panday lacks are interesting characters with motivation. Gamit na gamit na ang damsel-in-distress plot, and Panday adds nothing to it.

    i thought the old man was just a weirdo trying to follow the new panday wherever he goes. notice the mystifying "darating na" uttered by the old man as he passes by the new panday's way? apparently not only the new panday was baffled, i was baffled as well - i mean what the hell was that all about?

    is the old man meant to be profound in some mysterious way? why are they trying to make the show something which it is not?

    Well, this production has been mired with problems from the start. It's been re-cast and reshot and rewritten. According to some very reliable sources, even ang headwriters ng Panday hirap sa paggawa sa kwento. Napapangitan yung ibang staff sa endproduct.

    Dunno why this is so. I think ABS-CBN is stuck creatively. Their writers/soap operas rehash the same themes, the same gimmicks, the same plot twists .. nakakasawa na.

    Second, the director of Panday is Toto Natividad. His forte is Tagalog action films, which explains the tendency towards a lot of needless fight scenes na wala namang kinalaman sa istorya.

    Second, ABS-CBN relies heavily on "STAR POWER" instead of concept-based shows. Umaasa kasi na kung si Jericho o si Juday ay ilalagay magiging hit. Pwede daanin sa flash without substance. Nagagawa nila yan dati when GMA was a weakling compared to them, pero iba na ang panahon ngayon. Saka pa-ulit-ulit na kasi yung mga pambato nila. Claudine, Juday, Jericho, Diether, Kristine ... hindi nag-hit shows nila as much as before. People are clamoring for a change.

    Hindi lang Panday yang sakit na yan ha, look at SFASIAM. My God, what a painful concept

    The strength of Encantadia and SUGO does not lie with its stars ... in fact, the leads of Enca were virtually "starlets" compared to the fame they are experiencing now. The two shows are concept-based and GMA is blessed with better writers! Mas matagal pinlano. Di bale na kung di sikat ang mga artista na nasa leads. It's paid off -- now everyone knows who Diana, Iza, Karylle, Sunshine, Jennylyn are. But the strength of GMA is in their creative staff.

    Hmm, ABS-CBN needs a creative revitalization ... stat. Or else they can say goodbye to regaining the lead in primetime.

    The creative team of GMA is what spelled the success.

    Panday has its own strengths naman. I guess...the problem was with the promotions. I think the promoted it to such big hype early this year...then built it up by dragging it too long....so the expectations were atmospheric, only to be met with something in midair. *shrugs*

    but who knows, they might pick it up somewhere in the middle. However, EVERY GREAT STORY ALREADY STARTS GREAT.

    i am still pissed by someone saying that SUGO copied its storyline from PANDAY. i'm like......DUH! i know some people don't use their brains, and more still have no idea they have brains, but for them NOT TO HAVE brains? jaysus!

    Im really disappointed. I mean you've got the stars and money. Jusko naman! Napanood ko yung Panday ni FPJ ha at ok siya kahit na ganun ang effects. Eh ngayon? ano baaaaa...

    Napabilib talaga ako ng Encantandia. Maganda siya talaga, hindi kaya ng panday yung encantadia. Strong storyline sila eh kahit di masyadong sikat mga artista. Kala ko nga wala ng career si dingdong dantes eh after the tanya-dingdong love team pero tignan niyo naman ang asenso talaga ng encantadia. Bilib talaga ako sa set at cinematography. The best yet produced in Phil. tv.

    Oh, and additionally, that bit with the cellphone cracked me up. Oh my God, you're writing a fantasy. The main hero gets into the other world and he whips out a .... cellphone. Leche nga. That's the most un-magical thing ever. Sure dissipates whatever magical atmosphere you've conjured real quick. Hahahaha. Sobrang funny lang.

    Someone teach these muggles how to write, please.

    jericho had to use the cellphone because he is a major endorser of Smart Cellular Network and they had to insert the use of a cellphone somehow.....the Panday inspired billboards of Smart are all over EDSA.....that is the best that i can make out of that scene....hay naku...dahil lang sa sa sponsor sinira ang script.....

    wala natawa n nmn ako sa epi kagabi...yung mga kalaban in black naglalaro ng scorpions...gee y they love to create scenes which are unnecessary...gosh..so lame...di ko nman nakitaan ng takot sa mata ni heart..at lumalabas nmn yung palagi nyang pacute...tho Panday keep the audience intersted parang thrilling ang dating..dahil sa sounds at pagbibitin ng mga eksens...pero as awhole the story is lame and nothing..
  • as for heart...i caught the scene where she was asking to be freed and returned to her husband, i was thinking: THAT IS NOT EDEN. THAT IS SOOOOO MARGARET (I have watched the first and last parts of Hiram). she does not react the way someone in captivity would.

    let me ask. how's the cellular reception there? :D

    what made me laugh was the scene when philip salvador was taken up to heaven. i think they got the idea from the bible. wala na ba silang ibang maisip kung paano mawawala sa ekesena si ipe?

    I still watch panday kahit ganun sya, heart's acting last night proved that she's not yet a full pledged actress. Hindi ko makuha yung acting nya na nagmamaka-awa na pakawalan na. And when she met Lizardo, parang walag emotion sa face nya. One thing's for sure hindi pa sya actress. She haven't left her pa-sweet image and walang masyadong effort ang acting nya. sorry sa kanyang mga fans but this is my opinion. sana ibang actress na lang ang kinuha ng ABS marami naman silang talents na magagaling.
  • as my colleague (formerly of ABS-CBN) would say about the creativity of ABS long ago (before she resigned and went to GMA):

    The people of ABS-CBN are so in-the-box (nakakahon). They don't free their creativity because they believe that their poor and class E viewers here in the philippines are ignorant and would only understand plots that are already familiar to them: the ampons, nawawalang diaries, jukebox music, senseless fight scenes, crayolas, endless sampalans, the melodramas, etc.

    The "creative" people of ABS-CBN don't experiment in terms of plot because low rating would mean the end of their job, so they either rely on star power or hype promotions.

    HAHA. i like panday. for me, acting is really good. i'm guessing hinda pa masyadong magaling yung mga animators nila. haha, pero maganda naman. pasa na sa akin.

    i just noticed ha, and wanted to ask a question, okay more like a comment, wait it is a comment, kahit na you're neither a kapamilya/kapuso...pero i get this air na...you're more of a gma watcher than an abscbn watcher. la lang, anyways. bye.

    i have to agree with you. panday is terrible.

    although in general... all fantaseryes leave something to be desired... like encantadia, darna, etc. effects aren't that good.even the almighty abscbn with their loads of cash have substandard effects.

    but to be fair... it's not really their fault. i hear that just for one minute of effects costs an arm and a leg... oh well.

    and yes... i've heard that abscbn is the most uncreative body of people in the world.

    i have a friend who worked in kamao... and the writers just tore it to bits. i don't mean to sound rude... i've got lots of gay friends... but the gay writers in kamao just tore it to shreds. my friend just threw his hands up and gave up.

    the writers STINK!!! i'm sorry... but i have this notion that abscbn people all think they are so good. they've been number 1 for soooo long and have stayed complacent in their low quality shows. and now that they are literally and figuratively number 2... they are struggling to attain a quality that they can never have. even the directors and professionals they drag in are affected by this environment.

    if i was the owner of abscbn... i'd fire everybody and hire fresh new blood! stop paying millions to useless actors and hags like charo santos who are dragging the company into an eternal slump! man!!! charo gets millions for doing what again? i bet her mole is worth half a million!!!

    to neetch do u think y Rickey is more GMA viewer than ABS maybe its because he find GMA shows are way better than ABS shows now?...like i do :)...
