Search for Star in a Million

Awful, awful. Who’s writing this? Oh, I forgot, she used to be my headwriter when I was working in ABS-CBN. Nyek. The talent scout of this show should be fired. He or she couldn’t have picked a worse set of performers.

The background clips of the performers are non-sensical, the judging drawn out, and overall, the singing is just bad — it’s no wonder they have to scroll the lyrics on the screen because you can’t understand what anybody is singing. Plus, the walk of shame is horrible. Filipinos are a sensitive bunch, specially these young guys. I don’t see any entertainment value in seeing someone already slammed by making a fool of himself/herself singing, slammed by the judges and then made to walk to “loser” music as he/she walks off the stage. Bad, bad, bad. And they’re giving the winner P1 million? Geez. Maybe this show is a comedy, I don’t know. I should probably have different expectations next week.

The past two weeks have been a big disappointment. I missed the other finalists, so maybe there is some hope there — I spotted a couple of passable cuties — but this show is not watchable. Who are they kidding? I’ll listen to the eight guys I missed next week and then we’ll see.

Pinoy Pop Superstar – Danny Laureano

Danny Laureano

This week’s Pinoy Pop Superstar winner, Danny Laureano, shares the name of a former co-worker’s husband which was uncanny. I’m sure they would be thrilled that this kid has his name.

I also noticed that the contestants were very young. Yikes. They looked like babies. It was a bit surreal. Danny however belted it out magnificently and as a tribute I am giving him the American Idol treatment with this Quicktime video:

He also cried in the end, which basically just sold it for me. He needs to be the champion for four weeks to reach the finals, so let’s hope he continues his streak next week.

Kapuso vs. Kapamilya

I was chatting with Koolitz a few hours ago asking him what would be a good title for this new blog. I guess we know what he suggested. Been working on the site for a few hours now, I hope you like it.

I mentioned how I liked the GMA Pinoy TV shows more than the ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel ones, then he typed: “Kapuso ka pala.” Nyek. I hope there isn’t a great divide with Filipino viewers back in the Philippines. That would be terrible. I tend to like both, although I find that the GMA Pinoy TV offerings are of better quality. The made-for-the-OFW programming of GMA Pinoy TV are also way much better.

The American Idol knock-offs on both channels is a good example of where the two differ: Search for Star in a Million on ABS-CBN and Pinoy Pop Superstar on GMA. (Actually, they’re more of just rehashes of Ang Bagong Kampeon than AI, because they lack the essential Idol trademark of viewer voting, but that’s another discussion.) PPS is soooo much better than Star. In the Star in a Million episode I watched last week, the singers were so hopeless, I had to wonder who in their right minds would watch and sit through such torture. The beautiful Agot Isidro couldn’t even save the show as she had to blurt out these scripted criticisms to the contestants. They tried so hard to create drama and failed so miserably. Pinoy Pop Superstar on the other hand had less fancy criticisms/eliminations. Even if some of the singers were also suspect, at the very least they looked great, and better packaged than the ABS-CBN offering. (My next post is about this week’s Pinoy Pop Superstar winner.)

I won’t stop watching ABS-CBN however, since we are all about the cuties regardless of network affiliation. John Pratts for example was so annoying when he was a boy, but he’s such a looker now. And Koolitz tells me that Star Circle Quest is good.

I’ve only been watching Pinoy television again for about two weeks. I’m giving myself about a month to assimilate everything.
